Nian Gao (Chinese Rice Cakes)
Time: 15 minutes
Serves: 2
Suitable for Vegans
No word of a lie, this is the easiest dish to make. It has a handful of ingredients and it's my go to when I'm feeling lazy after a long day at work. Rice cakes are made from rice flour and have a chewy consistency. You can find them in a variety of different Asian dishes. I find that the simpler, the better.
• 1 packet of rice cakes (from any Asian supermarket)
• 3x tbs of light soy sauce
• A pinch of salt
• 1x tbs honey
• 1/2 cup of water
• 1x tsp bouillon powder (exclude if you're Vegan)
• Half a Chinese cabbage chopped
Step 1: Heat up a tbs of oil with a pinch of salt in a pan and add the Chinese cabbage. Stir through and make sure it's all well coated.
Step 2: Rinse your rice cakes and then add them into the pan along with the light soy sauce and water. Give it a quick stir and cover.
Step 3: After 10 minutes, take the lid off and add the bouillon powder and honey and stir thoroughly. let it sit with the lid on for a further few minutes. Serve immediately.
